Upon first reading Kurt's post, I completely agreed with the fact that it was kind of pathetic that Chick could not kill himself. After all, the one thing that the man wanted more than anything was to end his life due to his miserable state. However, giving Kurt's idea second thought, I began thinking that perhaps Chick's inability to commit suicide was not really his fault. I mean, did anyone else find it kind of weird that after Chick failed to end his life by throwing himself off of the water tower, his mother appeared? I really thought that Chick throwing himself off of the tower would end his life, and so did he; in the novel, Chick says "The rest is inexplicable. What I hit, how I survived, I cannot tell you." It seemed as if it was pure luck that Chick did not die. But later reading that his dead mother stood before him led me to believe that perhaps it was just his mother saving her son's life. As Chick goes to his childhood home with hopes to once again take his life, he hears his mother's voice calling to him. This prevents Chick from committing siucide yet again. Perhaps Chick's failed attempts to kill himself were not due to his "pathetic" life, but rather his mother's love for her son.

Wow you guys are really getting into this. I agree with Gator in the fact that Chick is pathetic. Not for failing to kill himself but because he actually wants to kill himself. His life is terrible and he doesn't have anything, but instead of saying life's too hard I can't stand to be alive anymore he should look for the good things that happens to him and push forward. There are always good things happening to people but some people just need to look harder than others. Chick needs to get his ass to an AA meeting, a therapist and get a job. Slowly he will start to bounce back. Or he could just say the hell with and get in a car crash and jump off a water tower.

I don't believe that Chick is pathetic. I believe that the reason he didn't die after his two attempts of suicide is because he was meant to live and restore his bond with his family. I mean what other reason can there be? Chick needs to turn his life around and with the guidance of his mother's ghost, he will start to realize things that he was blind to before. He will see what he'll need to do to restore the bond between his family and will also be able to recieve closure by spending time with Posey, and he will finally be able to travel over the mountain that has made him unable to continue forward in his life.

I think Chick was pathetic for not be able to kill himself. However I think that it represents his life after his mother died. He's a drunkard, has no family, and wasn't even invited to his daughter's wedding. His attempts reflected his state of mind, they're screwed up

I believe Kurt has a few valid points to this. Not only is it extremely sad that he cannot kill himself but I doubt that he really wants to. There a so many ways for a person to commit suicide, and I think it's more of a cry for help. He has gone through so much and he must really feel terrible, but he doesn't want to end it all, if he did he could have. He could has easily killed himself but I think he just wants someone to help him because in a life like his,he really needs someone.

Responding to kurts post, it is kind of pathetic that he went through all that trouble to try and kill himself. Although, there must be a bigger reason as to why he was so unsuccessful in achieving something he really was going to go through with. Maybe something miraculous will happen in his life that will mean something and make him question why he tried doing this in the first place.

Well hello everybody, Alex here. Going off of what david said, maybe there is some sort of divine force in play when it comes to all of this, I mean, the guy jumped off a water tower for crying out loud. Maybe something wants him alive...

I too agree that Chick is pathetic in not being able to kill himself after so many attempts, but I also think that maybe it shows he has a bigger meaning to his life that he just hasn't figured out yet, and it is just not his time to die yet.
