It seems as if Chick cannot really get over his father even though he has tried to eliminate him from his memories. He keeps having reoccurring dreams about his father returning and being there for him when he never initially was in the first place. When Chick then actually sees his father at his baseball games, he obeys him and listens to him as if he is still a father figure when he asks Chick if he wants to be driven back to his school. He does not tell his mother though, not once. This basically means that Chick still longs for his father’s attention and continues to neglect his mother.

I agree. Also, Chick is so obsessed with his fathers approval, that he drops out of college to play minor league baseball, just to impress him. This was against his mother's wishes, and he knew it, but did not care enough to stay in school. Chick shows his father far more love than his mother, and his father never reciprocates, so it is a vicious cycle of Chick attempting to impress his father, to be approved of, and it not happening.

I just wish Chick would realize how much his mother cares for him. She contantly offers him the love and support a parent should show their kid, but Chick just turns her away. He is insanely obsessed with getting affection from his father, and it is ruining his life, and making him a horrible person.
