I don't know about everyone else here, but I wish that I had a father like Chick. That guy is someone that you can count on. He taught his son to play baseball, and look at him now! No matter what happened, his dad was always helping him. What a guy.

I think, Kurt, that this comment is quite controversial depending on what side you are looking from. Chick would probably look back and say the his father was a bad parent who wasn't there. However, his father would most likely disagree and say that he has done all that was in his power to give Chick what he neede to grow up and succeed.

I agree with Kurt when it comes to this topic. I mean he taught him baseball it's Americas favorite past time. That is a gift that lasts a lifetime and now that chicks life is going to ruins his dad comes to help him out. Maybe his dad will show him how to go back too happiness by going back to what chick loves baseball. This man is not only a good farther but an amazing one.

Its all cool if he taught his kid how to play baseball ... but his kid isnt living life the best way possible. I could learn from youtube on how to play baseball, but youtube cant tell me how im supposed to live a good life w/o a father.

Relplying to Kurt, yes his dad did teach him how to play baseball and he did push him to become the man he grew up to be but, his father did walk out on him which no kid should ever have to deal with. I think if his dad did stay he would have been a very different person and most likely would not be doing the things he attempted in the beginning of the book. I think this damaged Chick and i dont think his father was a good father i mean he left his wife and kids and his wife was shunned by many other adults just because she was good looking and single. His father shared a love for a sport just as he did and I think that is the inly reason he taught him so much about the game.

I agree with kurt on this one because he made him into the man he became and if it wasn't for chick then who knows where and how chicks son would be and yes he taught him baseball but that not the most important part the little things he should him of being a man is what mattered so in the way i agree with kurt

Although Chick's father taught him to play baseball, he still left Chick at a young age which is an unforgivable action. Chick had to grow up without a father figure; he was never able to have a real father-son relationship. Agreeing with David, if Chick's father had stuck around for his childhood, Chick's life could be completely different than what it is now. Chick might have not gotten a divorce, might've had a better relationship with his daughter, and might've not been depressed and suicidal. Comparing Chick's two parents, his mother was the complete opposite of his father. Chick's mom was always there for him, always cared for him, and always loved him. The same cannot be said for Chick's father. In my opinion, teaching a child baseball does not make up for a lack of parenting, and it makes no sense whatsoever how Chick's father can walk right back into his son's life without having any remorse as to what he has put him through.

While Chick's father might have been a good role model to chick, I feel as if Chick's father had too many flaws that started to push away Chick's mother, intentionally or unintentionally. As Chick's father says, "You can be a father's boy or a mother's boy but you can't be both.

I disagree with Kurt. Chick's father did teach him how to play baseball but that's pretty much it. He left the family when the kids were young and didnt return to see Chick until he found out that Chick was playing baseball in college. His dad never went back to see Roberta or their mother. And when Chick stooped plying baseball and had kids his dad slowly stopped coming to visit Chick and his family.
